Architecture: Establish and maintain best practices design for front-end architecture with an emphasis on innovation, portability, extensibility and performance.

Research and document front-end best practices and/or architecture.
Conduct periodic code reviews for compliance with best practices.
Develop familiarity with all technology (third-party products, custom and open source frameworks) used in-house that affect the presentation layer.
Synchronize with back-end developers during the technical design phase.

Productivity: Institute policies and procedures to increase productivity and maintain retention.

Mentor developers.
Identify training or other educational tools to enhance skill-set of the group.
Implement policies or procedures that improve development lifecycle. Recommend productivity-enhancing technology.


Resourcing: Deploy resources as necessary to ensure the success of projects and the maintenance of existing code.

Assist in resource assignment.
Apportion bugs to developers commensurate with their workload, skill-set.
Collaborate on providing level-of-effort estimates.
Participate in the vetting and hiring of new web developers.

Oversight: Provide oversight on projects and staff.

Work closely with Project Managers, Designers, and Editorial groups to help define requirements and feasibility for new features.
Take over-all responsibility for timelines and deliverables for projects.
Provide leadership.
On-going appraisal of staff skill-level and productivity.


Coding: While assigned to the rapid application development group, act as a senior developer writing code. In other capacities, help troubleshoot particularly intractable coding issues as required.

Position Requirements
Architect-level understanding of at least two of the following:
Modern JavaScript coding techniques including object-oriented and unobtrusive JavaScript. Strong knowledge of DOM scripting and W3C event handling. Experience with using one or more JavaScript frameworks (jQuery, Dojo, Prototype, YUI). Expert-level AJAX/DHTML (HTML & XHTML, JavaScript 1.0-1.5, DOM Levels 0-2).
ActionScript 2.0 or 3.0 using object-oriented principles.
Architecting and implementing templating frameworks using MVC principles. Preferred experience in a Java/J2EE environment (Site Mesh/tiles/etc, JSP/JSTL server-side scripting).
Semantic (X) HTML markup using pure CSS2 layout techniques.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to work on and/or co-ordinate different responsibilities simultaneously within tight deadlines.
Leadership and management skills.


Education & Experience
5-7 years of professional web development experience.
Degree in Computer Science or comparable grounding in development methodologies and patterns.
Exposure to a sophisticated development environment involving multiple departments and developers. Specific experience in a Java/J2EE web application development environment highly desirable. Knowledge of source control utilities, Unix preferred. Php, Ruby or similar experience also a plus.
Management experience an advantage but not a requirement.
