Overview

Sybase database administrator with at three to five years experience. The candidate should also be familiar with Oracle and Microsoft SQL server. The DBA will work with both the development  and  support teams . The DBA will be involved in many levels of the software development cycle (technical design, optimizing database performance and system test support) as well the analysis of client support calls. The position reports to the manager of the Configuration Management Group.

 

 

The Role

This position will:

·          Create and support numerous internal databases running different versions of Sybase, SQL/Server and Oracle.

·          Developing data maintenance scripts and perform data maintenance activities.

·          Advising development teams upon best practice when creating database objects and reviewing database code.

·          Attend design reviews where applicable.

·          Database performance tuning of both internal and client systems.

·          Discuss database requirements with client (external or internal).

·          Accurately estimate effort for self and others, and agree schedules with manager.

·          Create and maintain appropriate documentation.

·          Escalate product issues and suggest product improvements, using appropriate processes.

·          Consider impact of any change on the system/product as a whole.

·          Escalate issues in a timely fashion.

 

 

Skills required

The following skills are essential:

·          Min 3 - 5 years of DBA experience using Sybase, SQL/Server and/or Oracle.

·          Major in Computer Science or related degree.

·          Complete understanding of software development life cycle and quality control methodologies.

·          Strong analytical skills.

·          Experience, gained in either a financial institution or software vendor of the following:

o         Database administration tools: Sybase Central,  SQL*Plus,  Enterprise Mgr

o         DBArtisian

o         Clustering and replication technology

o         SQL skills and query optimization.

·          Strong self management skills, particularly in respect to prioritization and execution.

·          Strong technical aptitude.

·          Must be able to work alone or in a team environment.

·          Self-motivated.

·          Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 

 

A distinct advantage for this position would be

·          Experience working with / for another software vendor or financial institution
