The qualities and experience they seek include:
Mastery of core Java, versions 1.5 or later, with emphasis on concurrency, generics, and language features
Experience in any of the following areas: algorithmic trading software; FIX-based order management systems and order routers; or any front-office real-time equity trading systems
Experience working with market data provider APIs
A good grasp of concepts and concerns in electronic trading of equities, or any exchange-traded instruments
Solid software engineering skills: the ability to produce maintainable and robust software
